En enkelt ålegræs plante dækker 180km

Store, flerårige ålegræsenge af Poseidon’s ribbon weed og wire weed (Amphibolis antarctica) dominerer en stor del af det marine økosystem i UNESCO’s verdensarvsområde Shark Bay i Australien.

 For to år siden opdagede forskere, imidlertid at noget af havgræsset var en klon af Poseidon’s ribbon weed (Posidonia australis), som havde 40 kromosomer i stedet for de typiske 20. De mener, at halvdelen af kromosomerne kommer fra ålegræsset og halvdelen fra en ukendt art.
